Adolescent relationship violence has mental health implications for victims, perpetrators
Described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as “physical, sexual, or psychological harm by a current or former partner or spouse,” intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious public health issue affecting millions of people in the United States. New research from sociologists shows that adolescents and young adults who perpetrate or fall victim to IPV are more likely to experience an increase in symptoms of depression.

Arianna: No Cost, Only Benefits Of Living Life Through The Third Metric
For Arianna Huffington, living life through the Third Metric has had “a thousand percent” unequivocal benefits, with “absolutely no cost.”

Huffington sat down with HuffPost Live’s Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani to discuss her 14th book, “Thrive.” Huffington gave details into her own battles with stress, sleep and success, and shared how much her life has changed for the better.

“In my personal life, I have never enjoyed my work and my life more, because I really now love my days,” Huffington said. “I literally remember feeling so exhausted, as I would push myself through meetings and calls and decisions, that there were days I would look at my desk and yearn to crawl under the desk, and just, like, sleep for 20 minutes, and this is an insane way to live.”

Huffington said she wasn’t always focused on a life of mindfulness, which is why she wrote “Thrive” in a way that would be relatable to skeptics.

“I had this amazing woman [my mother] who lived with me, who was embodying another way of living. But I was so driven that I wasn’t hearing it. So that’s why I’m so sympathetic towards people who are having a hard time implementing these changes, and that’s why I made the changes so microscopic and easy, so that anybody can start,” she explained.

7 Reasons to Risk an Intervention

#workbully #adultbully #stopbullies #narcissist

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
7 Reasons to Risk an Intervention
Today I’m writing to the loved ones of addicts and alcoholics who may have heard an incomplete message about your role. The message goes something like this: “I am completely powerless to help the addict I love, and the only thing I can do is stay out of the way until he or she ‘hits bottom.'”

It’s absolutely true that in trying to help we can unwittingly enable an addict or shield him from the very consequences that might spark a change. Wisdom is required, for sure. Al-Anon exists in large part for this reason — we can’t change another person. We can only change ourselves.

But none of this means we should do nothing while a loved one spirals ever further toward tragedy or death.

This topic is very personal to me. My oldest son Noah began a scary descent into alcoholism and drug abuse in his teens that continued into his 20s. When he was 21, a worried friend of his alerted us that Noah was drinking himself to death — literally.

We scrabbled together a small family intervention and got Noah into a three-month treatment program. He loved sobriety and was excited about the future. Then, on his first night out of rehab, he drank. He couldn’t explain why, and he didn’t get sober for another five years.

But here’s the thing. Despite the seeming failure of that intervention, I honestly don’t know if Noah would be alive today had we not acted. Who can say what seeds of hope were planted during his stay in treatment? Or whether, when he finally hit a horrible bottom years later, his memory of that time wasn’t part of the reason he reached for help instead of a gun?

If your loved one is in serious trouble with addiction, you may want to consider an intervention, too. An intervention happens when family and friends of an addict create a plan to lovingly but firmly confront an addict and urge him or her to get into treatment. Some families enlist professional help, while others go it alone. (See link below for a helpful article on this topic.)

Of course, many interventions fail. The addict refuses to accept help. Or, as with Noah, the help doesn’t seem to stick.

So why bother going to all that trouble and expense? Here are seven reasons why an intervention might be worth the risk.

1. Addiction is a progressive disease that only gets worse if left untreated and is often fatal. Especially with kids and young adults whose brains are still developing, a delayed response diminishes the chance for a full recovery. Waiting for a teen to “hit bottom” can be like waiting for stage II cancer to get to stage IV before starting treatment.

2. Interventions are often necessary to save lives because a hallmark of addiction is denial and resistance. Why would we let a clear symptom of a dangerous disease keep us from trying to get help for the sufferer?

3. Some addicts and alcoholics have to get sober for a while in order to realize they actually want to be sober. That’s why rehab or even jail can turn a person’s life around. The fog of insanity lifts enough that they can willingly reach for recovery.

4. Turning points don’t have to arrive on the heels of great devastation or loss. Paradoxically, they can also be chosen. In recovery we say, “The bottom is where you decide to get off the elevator,” and, “The bottom happens when you stop digging.”

5. Despair, shame, and mortification alone won’t bring most addicts to the point of change. Often, these painful emotions merely fuel the cycle of self-hatred and self-sabotage, reinforcing an addict’s fear that they don’t deserve to recover. A loving intervention can be a powerful message in this context.

6. For most of us, a low point does not become a turning point unless hope is part of the picture. With no view to a better life and nothing to lose, an addict can bump along a series of should-be bottoms for years. A strategic intervention by loved ones can point the way to a life that’s worth staying sober for.

7. Without intervention, many addicts simply won’t hit bottom until they’re six feet under — or have put someone else there. I often look around the room at all the years of sobriety represented in a recovery meeting and try to imagine what carnage the world has been spared.

Regardless of outcome, stepping in to urge treatment and set boundaries is a way of showing an addict just how far they’ve fallen at the same time that you’re showing them how deeply you love them. Being part of such an event can be a profound, even sacred experience. If it doesn’t change the addict, it might change you.

I realize that I’ve only touched the surface of a complicated issue, but I hope this list will spark some thinking. If you know someone who loves an addict, please pass this message along.

(Here’s a helpful post from another HuffPost blogger about what’s involved in an intervention.)

Psychiatric complications in women with polycystic ovary syndrome most often linked to menstrual irregularities
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormone imbalance that causes infertility, obesity, and excessive facial hair in women, can also lead to severe mental health issues including anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. A study identifies the PCOS complications that may be most responsible for psychiatric problems. While weight gain and unwanted body hair can be distressing, irregular menstrual cycles is the symptom of PCOS most strongly associated with psychiatric problems.

First stem cell study of bipolar disorder yields promising results
What makes a person bipolar, prone to manic highs and deep, depressed lows? Why does bipolar disorder run so strongly in families, even though no single gene is to blame? And why is it so hard to find new treatments for a condition that affects 200 million people worldwide? New stem cell research may help scientists find answers to these questions.

Adult day-care services boost beneficial stress hormones in caregivers
Family caregivers show an increase in the beneficial stress hormone DHEA-S on days when they use an adult day care service for their relatives with dementia, according to researchers. “We know that caregivers are at increased risk of illness, because of the long hours of care they provide and the high levels of stress. These findings suggest that use of adult day care services may protect caregivers against the harmful effects of stress associated with giving care to someone with dementia,” say the authors.

Stress impacts ability to get pregnant, study finds
Women who have trouble getting pregnant may be under too much stress, according to a new study. According to researchers, women who had the highest levels of stress actually took 29 percent longer to get pregnant compared to other women, and their risk of infertility doubled. Researchers tracked 501 American women ages 18 to 40 years who were free from known fertility problems and had just started trying to conceive, and followed them for 12 months or until they became pregnant.

Medical Marijuana May Ease Some MS Symptoms; Little Evidence For Other Complementary or Alternative Therapies
A new guideline suggests that there is little evidence that most complementary or alternative medicine therapies (CAM) treat the symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the guideline states the CAM therapies oral cannabis, or medical marijuana pills, and oral medical marijuana spray may ease patients’ reported symptoms of spasticity, pain related to spasticity and frequent urination in multiple sclerosis (MS). The guideline states that there is not enough evidence to show whether smoking marijuana is helpful in treating MS symptoms.

Lifestyle interventions can prevent major depression in adults with mild symptoms
Discussions with a dietary coach to learn about healthy eating were as effective as meeting with a counselor for problem-solving or ‘talk’ therapy in preventing major depression among older black and white adults with mild symptoms of the mood disorder, according to researchers. Depression is common and treatments often don’t completely resolve the disability that attends the illness.

Something From Nothing: Getting Through My Grief

#workbully #adultbully #stopbullies #narcissist

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
Something From Nothing: Getting Through My Grief
I recently marked the one-year anniversary of my mother’s death. I was with her throughout the week before she passed away and had the privilege of shepherding her through that transition — a moment I had been preparing for since I first became a hospice physician. I knew many years ago that I would be with my mom on the day she died and that it would be one of the most important days of my life.

Her death itself was actually joyful, though it was a process that took a great deal of inner work on her part, which has also been true for many of my hospice patients. Mom had been ready and waiting to “go home” for the previous five years and was relieved that her time had finally come. So as she took her last breaths I had to celebrate on her behalf, that her struggle was coming to an end, even while my heart was breaking as each thread of our physical connection slipped through my hands and I confronted the enormity of that loss.

For days after her death I was in a heightened state of consciousness — sensing her presence everywhere around me, exquisitely aware of the beauty and fragility of absolutely everything in existence. Every portal of my being was wide open and love poured freely into and out from my heart as I delicately negotiated those tender days.

But within a few weeks I had retreated into the protective cocoon of grief, while I went through the motions of daily life, numb and slightly dazed. I could no longer recall what it felt like to be in that incredible state of lightness I had experienced immediately after her death and I concluded that it had simply been a symptom of sleep deprivation.

Over the next few months I kept myself incredibly busy as I joined a mastermind group, traveled to a publicity summit, became a radio show host, produced a digital workshop and created an online interview series, along with doing speaking engagements in various parts of the country. I stayed constantly on the go and rarely took a moment off, even when I was “on vacation.”

I was proud of myself for being so resilient and productive. I didn’t realize that I had actually been hiding for all of those months from the grief that was mounting up inside me. But then everything fell apart: my radio show was cancelled, the interview series ended, my mastermind group moved on without me, my publicity contacts stopped communicating and I had run out of speaking engagements.

Winter weather had arrived, the holidays were looming, my calendar was empty and I had nothing to show for a year of exhausting over-commitment and frantic busy-ness. I suddenly recognized how short the days had become as I laid awake for hours in the darkness, lost in my own emptiness.

“This is my first holiday season without Mom,” I thought to myself, remembering how much she loved these times of celebration and always made each moment feel so full… full of love and joy and laughter. And now, though I had the financial resources to buy anything I wanted or needed, I could not even begin to fill this emptiness that haunted me deep in the darkness.

How had she done it? What “magic” had she created to make each moment of anticipation before a special holiday feel so extraordinary, so full of meaning?

Searching for answers, I unpacked a box of some of her prized holiday decorations I had “inherited” after she died: a glittery ornament she and my grandmother had pieced together from old greeting cards; a tree-shaped wall hanging she and her sister made from broken green and brown glass (beer bottles my grandfather found in the trash behind a local dance hall) and adorned with old costume jewelry; various vases and candle holders she had crafted from discarded plastic bottles and glass jars, decorated with scraps of lace and fabric.

I had found these “treasures” of hers to be deeply embarrassing when I was a teenager and my friends from across town would visit our little house. They lived in huge homes, fancily decorated with porcelain figurines and hand-painted glass ornaments, which no one was allowed to touch. Yet my mother, oblivious of our humiliating low social status, proudly displayed her homemade trinkets as if they were priceless works of art.

Lost in these memories as I held the fragile greeting card ornament in my hands, I suddenly realized what my mother had been able to do all those years ago …

She had created something from nothing …

She had excelled at making each day seem special, even though her resources were limited. She managed to create little miracles everywhere she went, though her pocketbook was empty. She took things that were unwanted and discarded and gave them new purpose and meaning, finding the hidden beauty in everything.

She did this even with the destitute families she met who needed a place to live — she allowed them to move into the little rental house she owned, knowing they wouldn’t be able to pay their rent for several months. “You will make it up later when things are going better,” she would tell them. And her grateful tenants, relieved that someone finally saw something of value in them, almost always repaid her.

As I arranged my mother’s treasures on a shelf in my living room, I suddenly knew what I needed to do. I would find my way through this grief that was smothering me by doing what Mom would do: make something from nothing.

That night when the sun went down and the temperature dropped well below freezing, I placed two buckets of water out in the snow. They froze around the perimeter and remained hollow inside, forming beautiful sparkling ice lanterns that glowed with the light of the candles I placed in them.

I situated these ice lanterns at the top of my driveway, where they illuminated the path toward home in the deepest darkness of night though they were composed of “nothing” but water. Each evening as I trudged through the snow to light them, I took comfort in the warmth emitted by those tiny flames and found hope that perhaps this light will also guide others who are wandering in the dark shrouds of grief toward the home they are seeking.

Though Mom will never again be with me physically and I will never again open a present from her on a special holiday, I have received the most important gift she could ever give me: the ability to cherish what really matters in life, to find the hidden beauty in everything, to make something from nothing.

And that has become my path through this process of grief: to continue to honor Mom’s memory by offering up whatever I have as a gift to the universe, free from self-judgment and embarrassment, cherishing each moment as a priceless work of art, creating always:

Something from nothing …

Light in the darkness …

Fullness within the emptiness.

It is all I can do right now… and indeed… all that needs to be done.

School hearing tests do not detect noise exposure hearing loss
School hearing tests cannot effectively detect adolescent high-frequency hearing loss, which is typically caused by loud noise exposure, according to researchers. School screenings primarily focus on low-frequency hearing loss. This is logical for young children, who are more likely to develop low-frequency hearing loss due to fluid in the ear after a bad cold or an ear infection. Adolescents, however, are more susceptible to high-frequency hearing loss, usually brought on by exposure to loud noises, but the same tests are used on adolescents and young children.

Tooth loss linked to depression, anxiety
Tooth loss from caries and periodontal disease is an outcome from complex, chronic conditions. Several biopsychosocial factors are involved, including accessing care. Individuals reporting dental anxiety may avoid dental care; and individuals with depression may be negligent in self-care. In this study, researchers examined a potential association of tooth loss with depression and anxiety.

5 Easy Tricks to Bust Out of a Bad Mood

#workbully #adultbully #stopbullies #narcissist

5 Easy Tricks to Bust Out of a Bad Mood
Bad moods are the worst, aren’t they? Especially the ones that you just wake up with and can’t shake. Those are the ones I really dislike. But as I’ve come to learn over the years, you can either make or break your own happiness. And while sometimes it isn’t easy, no matter the circumstances, you can choose to be happy — or at least not miserable. So when I wake up on the wrong side of the bed, here are my five favorite things to do to break the bad-feeling mojo!

1. Buy fresh flowers. They’re bright and cheery, and it’s just hard to feel anything but grateful when you look at them. So when I’m feeling low, I treat myself to a fresh bouquet of Gerbera Daisies or daffodils! They always puts a smile on my face, and it feels like a real luxury that I get to enjoy for days at a time.

2. Write a feel-good note to someone else. The easiest way to bust a bad mood is to do something positive and loving for someone else. Whether it’s to a family member, friend or even a neighbor, sending a note of encouragement or a simple thank-you-for-being-you letter is a great way to tap into your very own positive vibe.

3. Go for a run or a walk. Exercise is seriously my reset button. Just a few miles out jogging and all of a sudden things don’t feel so bad. Problems are smaller, my energy is higher and the world just seems sunnier. (And, yes, you too can be a runner!)

4. Meditate. If there’s a bad mood I can’t shake, many times I’ll hit my meditation pillow or yoga mat for a few minutes of stillness. While some days you just feel off, other times being in a bad mood can mean that I’m not fully dealing with some emotion. So just a couple minutes of quiet allows me to get to the root of the emotion, feel it and then get on with my day from a better, healthier and more positive headspace.

5. Read something inspiring. I am a sucker for feel-good books and websites! And when I need a pick-me-up, I will turn a new page by literally opening a book and reading a new page. From self-help books to inspiring biographies to websites with positive quotes, I seek out something that will help me to see my life in a new uplifting way.

How do you bust out of a bad mood?

Patients with schizophrenia have impaired ability to imitate, brain mapping confirms
A brain-mapping study of patients with schizophrenia has found that areas associated with the ability to imitate are impaired, providing new support for the theory that deficits in this basic cognitive skill may underlie the profound difficulty with social interactions that characterize the disorder. According to psychologists, imitation is something that we all do whenever we learn a new skill, whether it is dancing or how to behave in specific social situations.

How lost sleep leads to lost neurons
Extended wakefulness is linked to injury to, and loss of, neurons that are essential for alertness and optimal cognition, the locus coeruleus neurons, a mouse model of chronic sleep loss has revealed. According to common wisdom, catch up sleep repays one’s “sleep debt,” with no lasting effects. But the new study shows disturbing evidence that chronic sleep loss may be more serious than previously thought and may even lead to irreversible physical damage to and loss of brain cells.

Depression News — ScienceDaily
Tooth loss linked to depression, anxiety
Tooth loss from caries and periodontal disease is an outcome from complex, chronic conditions. Several biopsychosocial factors are involved, including accessing care. Individuals reporting dental anxiety may avoid dental care; and individuals with depression may be negligent in self-care. In this study, researchers examined a potential association of tooth loss with depression and anxiety.

Time out: Spanking babies is surprisingly common, U.S. study finds
The same hands that parents use to lovingly feed, clothe and bathe their babies are also commonly used to spank their bundles of joy. A new study found that 30 percent of 1-year-old children were spanked at least once in the past month by their mother, father or both parents. A long-time topic of debate, spanking children is a common practice among U.S. parents.

Depression News — ScienceDaily
No evidence that vitamin D supplements reduce depression, study concludes
Vitamin D deficiency has been implicated in numerous health conditions in recent years, including depressed mood and major depressive disorder. Recent observational studies provide some support for an association of vitamin D levels with depression, but the data do not indicate whether vitamin D deficiency causes depression or vice versa. These studies also do not examine whether vitamin D supplementation improves depression.

Wishing to be another gender: Links to ADHD, autism spectrum disorders
Children and teenagers with an autism spectrum disorder or those who have attention deficit and hyperactivity problems are much more likely to wish to be another gender. This is the conclusion of the first study to compare the occurrence of such gender identity issues among children and adolescents with and without specific neurodevelopmental disorders. Participant children were between 6 and 18 years old. They either had no neurodevelopmental disorder, or they were diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a medical neurodevelopmental disorder such as epilepsy, or neurofibromatosis.

Obesity, depression linked in teen girls, new study shows
Depression and obesity have long been associated, but how they relate over time is less clear. New research shows that adolescent females who experience one of the disorders are at a greater risk for the other as they get older. It is unknown why no associations across time between the two disorders were found in male adolescents, but researchers hypothesize that it could be a result of different developmental processes leading to obesity and depression in males and females.

It’s Time to Bring Depression Out of the Dark

#workbully #adultbully #stopbullies #narcissist

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
It’s Time to Bring Depression Out of the Dark
Clinically significant depression affects nearly one of five adults. Its symptoms — whether they be sleepless nights or feelings of worthlessness — are a heavy burden for sufferers and caregivers alike. The burden is heavier because it is born in isolation. In most quarters, depression remains socially toxic, a topic to be concealed from friends, co-workers, even family members. When we speak of depression it is often in the most hushed of tones.

I know from personal experience how difficult it is to talk about depression. Although I am a reasonably forthright and articulate man, it took me nearly 20 years after my severe episode of depression before I could fully tell the world, even my own daughter, what had really happened. It’s hard to imagine this happening for any other major health condition. Would it ever take someone 20 years to disclose a heart attack?

One big reason that we don’t talk about depression: Unlike Livestrong bracelets for cancer or the rainbow flag for the LGBT community, depression has lacked any kind of unifying public symbol.

2014-03-20-Gay_flag.svg.png

In a culture founded on the pursuit of happiness, depression is always going to be a hard topic to broach. But it’s going to be even harder when our first associations to the subject are unfortunate images, such as a dark cloud or a noose. Depressed and formerly depressed people are ever on the defensive. We need better marketing and messaging. We need symbols that people can get behind, rallying points for a more productive conversation.

Enter free glow-in-the-dark wristbands printed with the phrase “Come Out of the Dark.” With a wonderful organization of student volunteers, we have distributed thousands of these wristbands to anyone in the U.S. who asked for one. If you want one, just ask.

People are not only drawn to the low price of the wristbands; they also like the slogan, “Come Out of the Dark,” which is open to several interpretations. To me it means:

Let’s end society’s ignorance about depression.

Let’s support depressed people so they get well and stay well.

Let’s create an environment where people can speak freely about depression and no one feels compelled to conceal their pain.

Across America, a new conversation about depression has been launched. People are talking about depression around their kitchen tables, and at their churches and schools. And they’re even broaching the topic on social media, where they are starting to post pictures.

If you look at those who are bringing depression out of the dark, depression’s human side is revealed. The abstraction of “one out of five people” becomes the faces and stories of actual individuals who have been touched by depression. We see the faces of parents who wear wristbands for their depressed children. We see those who wear a wristband out of sympathy for a friend who struggles. We see those who wear a wristband in tribute to a loved one lost to suicide. And, of course, we see the faces of people who have been touched personally by depression, those who have conquered it, and those who still struggle daily. These people are rich, poor, black, white; they’re, well, everyone.

Here’s how Uma Chandran described the significance of her “Come Out of the Dark” wristband:

Thanks to people like you, the stigma against depression and any form of mental illness can be wiped out one band and one wrist at a time! Twenty five years of struggling with depression, after multiple suicide attempts, lot of shame and guilt worth nothing…I am thriving knowing that the demons may strike anytime yet proud to be where I am today, equipped with the coping strategies, everyday is blessed!!

Together, let’s bring depression out of the dark.

It’s long overdue.
