Signs point to sharp rise in drugged driving fatalities
The prevalence of non-alcohol drugs detected in fatally injured drivers in the US steadily rose from 1999 to 2010 and especially for drivers who tested positive for marijuana. Researchers found that of 23,591 drivers who were killed within one hour of a crash, 39.7 percent tested positive for alcohol and 24.8 percent for other drugs. The prevalence of non-alcohol drugs rose from 16.6 percent in 1999 to 28.3 percent in 2010; for marijuana, rates rose from 4.2 percent to 12.2 percent.

‘Love hormone’ oxytocin carries unexpected side effect
Some psychologists are keen to prescribe oxytocin off-label, in order to treat mild social unease in those who don’t suffer from a diagnosed disorder. Not such a good idea, say researchers.

What comforts targets of prejudice the most
Rare in history are moments like the 1960s civil rights movement, in which members of a majority group vocally support minority groups in their fight against prejudice. New research not only confirms the power of speaking up for those facing prejudice but also underlines the importance of exactly what is communicated. Looking at YouTube video messages, researchers found that homosexual youth found the most comfort in messages that both supported them and advocated social change.

Does caregiving cause psychological stress? Study of female twins says it depends
A newly published study shows that the associations between caregiving and different types of psychological distress (depression, anxiety, perceived stress and perceived mental health) depend largely on a person’s genes and upbringing — and less so on the difficulty of caregiving.

Spirituality, religion may protect against major depression by thickening brain cortex
A thickening of parts of the brain cortex associated with regular meditation or other spiritual or religious practice could be the reason those activities guard against depression – particularly in people who are predisposed to the disease, according to new research. Researchers studied 130 subjects and found that those who highly valued spirituality showed thicker portions of brain cortices that may protect against depression — especially in those at high risk for the disease.

Connect to Something Greater Than Yourself

#workbully #adultbully #stopbullies #narcissist

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
Connect to Something Greater Than Yourself
By Jan Bruce

Famous psychiatrist and holocaust survivor Dr. Viktor Frankl once wrote, “He who has a why can bear any how.”

The how are the strategies for getting the work done, achieving your goals — but without knowing the driving reason behind it, you’ll be hard pressed to stay on track, no matter how great those strategies are. Think of the “how” as the engine — it will make movement happen and get you forward. The “why” is the fuel.

meQuilibrium’s chief science officer, a leading expert on resilience, Andrew Shatté, Ph.D., describes the “why” in terms of four levels:

Level 1: Individual goals. At this basic level, you’re concerned mainly with what you have and achieve, be it a certain amount of money or standard of living, a specific job or goal, for none other than the pleasure and satisfaction it creates for you and you alone.

Level 2: Family. This takes your why a step beyond yourself to include the people closest to you. If your motivation includes doing more for your family, or setting an example for your children, then you function at this level.

Level 3: Community. You are driven not just by your own achievements or the well-being of your family, but by the world around you, be it the city or town in which you live to the global community.

Level 4: Religion, spirituality, values. If you feel connected to something larger than yourself, you’re driven by the very highest level of achievement, greater than the people around you, whether that means God, spirituality, or a set of values you live by. In short, something that will outlast and outlive you.

The higher the level, the greater your resilience.
With each step up in the connection, you’re more resilient — not to mention, more satisfied. Each subsequent level strives for more and deeper reach, and it’s that higher purpose that gives you the power to withstand anything. As we like to say, the bigger the boat, the less likely it is to capsize.

By aligning your efforts with something bigger than yourself or your own achievements, you infuse your efforts with passion and purpose.

Let’s look at volunteering as an example.

Sure, you can do it once a week to pad your resume. You can do it to serve as a good example for your kids. But if you can approach the task from a place of compassion, and recognize your contribution as something greater, as standing for more, you’ll derive greater satisfaction and reward from it — and likely feel that much more committed. It’s easy to let yourself off the hook when you think it doesn’t matter, but not when you know being there makes a difference to your community — and even more so when you believe you’re living your values.

Do some soul searching
Ask yourself how you might connect with a cause on all four levels:

Level 1: How do you define success? What short- and long-term goals do you have for yourself? What do you wish for yourself to achieve and to experience?

Level 2: How does your family inspire you? What do they depend on you to do or be? What goals do you have for you family? What can help you and your loved ones to realize these goals?

Level 3: What are your hopes for your community? How do you define community? As your circle of family and friends or a group as large as your country (or even humanity)? What sort of change or progress do you wish for this group? Is there a problem this community faces that you are inspired to fix? How can you make your world a better place?

Level 4: What are the ideals you strive to live up to? What are the core principals you want to live by? How can you make these more present in your everyday actions?

Identifying these purposes requires some deep thought and maybe even some soul-searching. The power that real purpose brings to any effort makes it all worthwhile. So take the time to identify how you connect with something greater than yourself, and prepare for the power you will wield when you tap into that intention.

Labeling obesity as a disease may have psychological costs
Messages that describe obesity as a disease may undermine healthy behaviors and beliefs among obese individuals, according to a new study. The findings show that obese individuals exposed to such messages placed less importance on health-focused dieting and reported less concern about weight. These beliefs, in turn, predicted unhealthier food choices.

App may signal cellphone dependency
A new, free app will allow smartphone users to measure their cellphone use. Computer scientists and psychologists have developed an application for this purpose. Whoever installs it can see, e.g., how much time s/he spends on the phone or which apps s/he uses most frequently. The relevant key data is sent to a server anonymously for the scientists to analyze. They are already using a similar technology for the early detection of depression.

Confessions to My Body

#workbully #adultbully #stopbullies #narcissist

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
Confessions to My Body
Dear Body:

I’m so, so sorry. It’s taken me years to realize that I’ve treated you badly.

I don’t just mean eating all that heavy, buttery, sugary food over the holidays. Nor am I talking about lazily sitting on the couch, avoiding any form of exercise.

Yes, those things are bad, and I’m sorry for allowing them. I know nutrition and exercise are important. But lapses in those areas aren’t my biggest violation towards you.

There’s something much worse that I’ve done to you.

It’s subtle. So it’s taken me a long time to realize and admit where I’ve done you wrong.

Sweet Body, I confess I haven’t trusted you. I’ve been a bad friend.

I mean, how about that job offer that I evaluated as “sexy,” while you nudged me with that queasy, uneasy stomach, trying to get me to look deeper at the frantic environment and hard-driving management? After the big company made their offer, I went to meet with more executives just to ensure a good choice. What happened in those interactions? You signaled me with tense shoulders that made me look and feel stiff. A dry throat and clenched jaw that made it hard to get a word out.

But how did I respond? I ignored the signs you were sending me. I was mesmerized by the money.

I suffered in that job. For years, I pushed and pushed to prove I could do all that analytical work. I wanted to show I could flex my brainiac muscle. So in the name of making myself big and important, I forced us to pull all-nighters, spend weekends crunching numbers, and live out of hotel rooms for months. Actually, I hated that job. Yet I refused to admit it. I could not bring myself to say, “I quit!” So finally, after two back-to-back weeks of working 100 hours, you finally got my attention by making me pass out from exhaustion in front of a group of clients while making a presentation. For over four years, I ignored the signs of a poor job fit that you’d been pointing out.

I held on to that job too tightly. When I had the chance to go on that amazing trip to Peru to see the ruins, you peppered me with buzzing and tingling all over to convey excitement. So what did I do? I defiantly demanded to stay home so I could work towards a promotion. One I never got. Why didn’t I just trust that sense that this was the trip of a lifetime, and figure out how to take it?

There was the time I opened my heart to a man who loved to run errands for me, cook for me, and indulge me with back massages. I’d never been so free from tension. My shoulders had never felt so relaxed and appropriately far from my ears. My belly was so pleasantly full, and my taste buds sang nightly. But I defiantly determined, “He doesn’t have a good degree. And he has a blue collar job.” So I kicked him to the curb. And broke my own poor heart.

Afterwards, I strutted my stuff when I met a millionaire with a fancy sports car who wined and dined me. He constantly complimented me on my clothing, my figure. My new baubles and bracelets captured his attention. Yet when I’d share stories about family or friends, he’d tune out. If I told him about my dreams and wishes, he’d patronizingly reply, “That’s nice, sweetie.” I pushed down the stinging hurt that you sent my way. I never probed his behavior. Why? Well, I was too scared to lose him. Oh, how did I overlook or ignore my inner strength? Why didn’t I trust you to help me stand up for myself?

I failed to tune in to the migraines that you brought on during that courtship. My parents made a fairytale wedding for us, so I was baffled when my husband told me, on our wedding night, that he never wanted my parents so involved in our lives again. I hung in with him for a few years, trying to analyze the nasty names he called me or the ways he mocked my emotions, aloud and by deed, and essentially called me “worthless.” It wasn’t until he raised a hand to strike me that I suddenly sensed the steely grip of fear you washed over me. I finally realized it was time to leave the marriage.

Funny, but those headaches disappeared immediately after I left him.

Good friends listen to and trust each other. I haven’t done that with you.

2014-01-22-SLBeyesclosedheartgut43KB.jpg
Oh, Dear Body, I’ve ignored your nudges, your poking, your prodding.

I get it now: I need to listen to the very subtle ways you speak to me. I finally understand that you communicate through sensations. Like where I feel tension or expansion. Or whether my breath is shallow or deep in my chest and belly. Or whether I feel hot or cold. Now, I can notice the times I sense bubbling, tingling, tightness, openness, and so many other sensations you generate — and know you are trying to get my attention.

I’m beginning to understand something vital: When you have something to say, you tend to speak in whispers. But if I don’t catch your initial drift, you become more emphatic. Like the way you made me pass out so I could wake up. To hear you early on, I need to slow way down and get quiet enough to listen inside, and tune in to what you’re saying through senses. The longer I ignore you, the louder you scream. But it’s not nice for me to make you shout. Besides, if you reach that boiling point, I’m already deep in trouble.

So I’m intentionally learning to pay attention to you. I’m discovering your signs and signals, moment to moment.

I’m good at logic, at figuring things out.

But, you, Dear Body, you’re the expert on feeling things out. Like walking into a room and sensing the dominant mood. Or, much more importantly, turning inward and tuning in to the internal weather report for my current (and ever-shifting) emotional state.

I’m waking up to the aliveness, vitality and energy that’s “at my fingertips” when I remember to activate longer, deeper breathing. Now, when I ask you to help me stand up for myself, and we activate the muscles in the legs and belly — wow! I feel a surge of power and strength, both physical and emotional. It’s exciting to experience greater presence simply by tuning in to the sense of gravity you convey as my feet contact the ground. I adore your sensational abilities, sweet Body.

Body, I’m truly grateful to you. I’m done ignoring, overlooking and pushing your wisdom aside. I’m listening with appreciation now.

We work better so much when we’re a team. So you know what? I’m going to listen to you. And in important matters, like career, love, friendships and family, I’ll trust your guidance. Please help me sense what matters. You’re the compass. Show me where we’re heading. Once you point the way, I’ll take care of figuring out how to get where we’re going. And we’ll work together at navigating.

I’m deeply inspired to be on this sensational life voyage with you.

I love you,
Susan

P.S. — You know, I used to see us as separate. Like I lived in “The Mind” and you’re over there, as “The Body.” Sorry if I’m still prone to use those unnatural distinctions. I’m entwined with you. We’re one. I get it. Even if I forget sometimes.

A Month-Long Meditation Retreat Changed My Life
Could you drop out of your everyday life for an entire month to become more mindful?

That’s exactly what Marie Claire senior editor Whitney Joiner did when she attended a month-long meditation retreat. She spent her days alternating between sessions of sitting meditation, which lasted between 20 and 45 minutes, and 15-minute intervals of walking meditation. She also did yoga, shared meals with others on the retreat and participated in discussion groups about finding and sustaining inner peace.

By the end of the month, Joiner felt her life had been changed.

“I felt so grounded afterwards and so peaceful,” she told HuffPost Live. “Of course that doesn’t completely last when you come back into your everyday life, but afterwards I felt much more able to stay with myself and stay with my experience and stay present.”

Find out exactly what a month of meditation is like in the video above.

Flow State: How to Cultivate a State of Bliss and Seamless Productivity

#workbully #adultbully #stopbullies #narcissist

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
Flow State: How to Cultivate a State of Bliss and Seamless Productivity
Most of us have had a heightened and radical experience where time slows down, specific details are enhanced, and self vanishes. This is what some top athletes describe as being “in the zone.” In these amplified moments of consciousness, we make connections we had missed before, hatch breakthroughs to problems that have been stumping us and push the limits of what’s possible for human performance.

I’ve felt it hundreds of times after several hours in front of an Avid while editing my films — but I never knew there was a name for it. It’s when I put enough time in that the gifts start coming. It’s a transcendent feeling, as if I have to race to physically manifest the ideas and connections that are flowing through me. I become a conduit as puzzle pieces fly into place. Ever been there? Sometimes it just happens to us suddenly with a click, like magic. At other times, we think we know how we got there but what if we could dial it in whenever we wanted to cultivate that state of bliss and seamless productivity?

Steven Kotler and Jamie Wheal, the co-founders of Flow Genome Project, have been at the forefront of discovering the triggers in order to unlock and harness these “flow states.” With wide-ranging examples from different disciplines such as the Curies’ “eureka moment,” Einstein’s mathematical genius, Mozart’s legendary compositions as well as Michael Jordan’s wizardry on the basketball court, Kotler and Wheal have examined how major athletic competitions, scientific discoveries, and significant progress in the arts are associated with the unconscious creativity that surges out of flow states. According to Wheal, “Flow Genome Project is an interdisciplinary organization dedicated to mapping the deep science of ultimate human performance.” Kotler adds, “Flow states are defined as optimal states of consciousness. These are states where you feel your best and you perform your best.”

Flow is not only for extreme sports enthusiasts. Business leaders and scientific researchers are now taking note of flow states and the possible implications for society. A McKinsey study finds that top executives in “flow” are five times more productive than out of it — this means that if we as a society or as employers could increase the amount of time we are in flow by 20 percent, we would double our productivity.

In order to unleash this tidal wave of creativity, the Flow Genome Project is planning to launch Flow Dojo Research and Performance Centers, which they describe as “a playground dedicated to the seeking and training of flow states.” The Dojo’s will have 360-degree immersive dome projections, human gyroscopes, and huge looping swings where both experts and regular folks can immerse themselves in extreme environments and examine their physical and mental states. The goal is to advance “21st century skills” such as resilience, cooperation, and hot decision-making that are not taught in our schools, so that ultimately our children can master today’s challenges.

In this week’s episode of ATD’s “The Future Is Now” series, we sat down with Wheal and Kotler to dive deep into the neuroscience and cutting-edge research that has characterized these historic and groundbreaking leaps in human performance:

For Jamie Wheal and Steven Kotler, “flow” is not just a professional crusade — both men have credited the state with saving their lives. Steven had been suffering from a debilitating illness, bed-ridden for three years, and living at 10-percent functionality. He found himself in a state of consciousness where he encountered what felt like “mystical experiences,” and he thought he was dying. When he recovered, he wanted to find out more about this state and ended up publishing two books on “flow,” including the forthcoming book The Rise of the Superman. Jamie, on the other hand, describes himself as that “prototypical angry young man,” courting death with high-risk behavior — “Either I was going to find something more worth living for, or I was going to continue taking bigger and bigger risks. I was going to keep going until I got it, or I was content to let it get me.” Through “flow,” he was able to channel this existential crisis into a career, designing and delivering dynamic outdoor educational learning experiences to everyone from children to business leaders. Kotler’s research into the scientific side of flow was a perfect match with Wheal’s focus on experiential learning to build out Flow Genome Project.

Wheal and Kotler have huge plans for their flow Dojos in major metropolitan areas, where they will offer MacArthur-style fellowships to scientists from related fields. Wheal believes, “One of our core intentions is almost a sort of revival of Plato’s Academy, where you bring together the best and the brightest, you train, you think, you play, and you go out and you seed culture.” They have already attracted high-profile advisors and board members such as James Olds from the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study from George Mason University, Redbull’s High Performance Director Andy Walshe, and New York Times bestselling author and world-renowned ADHD expert Dr. Ned Hallowell, among others.

Of course, one can’t be in a “flow state” all the time; they’re part of a cycle that involves gearing up, entering flow and a coming-down recovery period. But Kotler and Wheal hope that helping people access flow more regularly will enable them towards not only greater productivity but greater happiness. For Wheal, the question he seeks to answer is “How do we unlock that possibility, not just in the best of the best, but allow it to actually be our own birthright and to reclaim that? How do we not simply say voyeuristically, ‘Wow, that’s awesome, but I could never,’ and actually say, ‘That’s incredible, and I can too!.'” Projected completion for the first dome is Fall 2014/Winter 2015, and I’ll be the first in line.

The way to a chimpanzee’s heart is through its stomach
Researchers measured the urinary oxytocin levels in wild chimpanzees after food sharing and found them to be elevated in both donor and receiver compared to social feeding events without sharing. Furthermore, oxytocin levels were higher after food sharing than after grooming, another cooperative behavior, suggesting that food sharing might play a more important role in promoting social bonding.

One in two users accepts a lack of privacy on internet
85 out of every 100 people in Switzerland have access to the internet. Internet usage is on the rise, with even 70 percent of senior citizens going online. However, the concerns about using the internet are still substantial with regard to companies monitoring data. In general, study results show that young people are less worried about privacy, and in general, women are more concerned about protecting their privacy than men.

Belief in immortality hard-wired? Study examines development of children’s ‘prelife’ reasoning
By examining children’s ideas about “prelife,” the time before conception, researchers found results which suggest that our bias toward immortality is a part of human intuition that naturally emerges early in life. And the part of us that is eternal, we believe, is not our skills or ability to reason, but rather our hopes, desires and emotions.

Women with a high economic status claim to have better sex, Spanish study shows
A higher socioeconomic status has been associated with a more satisfying sex life. An analysis based on the first Spanish National Sexual Health Survey, carried out in 2009, confirms that socioeconomic factors affect sexual satisfaction. People with a lower economic status claim to be less sexually satisfied, particularly women.

Stop Trying to Talk Yourself Into What You Don’t Want

#workbully #adultbully #stopbullies #narcissist

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
Stop Trying to Talk Yourself Into What You Don’t Want
I remember the dread and drain of feeling trapped in a job I hated. It was a “good job,” but it wasn’t fulfilling. I knew I was capable of more — doing more, earning more, and having more impact. Not only that, but I didn’t trust or respect the people that I was working for and with.

The typical advice given to someone in this situation is to just be grateful for having a job. And I was grateful, but there was also another truth that I needed to acknowledge: It is okay to outgrow where you are.

My heart started racing. I felt dizzy, weak, and had a hard time concentrating. An overwhelming sadness folded around me like a swaddling cloth. I felt constrained by it on every side. It was Sunday night, and this was my body’s response to preparing to face another Monday morning.

My Sunday night fits were the worst when I was a teacher. I taught 5th grade for two years that felt incredibly long and were extremely stressful. I loved teaching. And although I knew I wanted to use my gift of teaching to change lives, the role of elementary teacher was not the ideal position for me. I joke that I didn’t have a cape or the boots to be a teacher; good teachers really are superheroes. At the end of my second year of teaching, I made a decision that I would not be going back for a third year.

Now, I could have seen the $80,000 education, the hours spent student teaching and serving in AmeriCorps, and all the preparation for the six-hour exam as a loss. Instead, I focused on what those experiences taught me. I learned about my capacity for compassion and commitment. And I learned how much I truly did want to help other people succeed. One of the most important lessons I learned was this: If you don’t like where you are, you have the choice and power to change things.

I could have chosen to wallow in a career that I was clearly ill-suited for. Had I made that choice I am sure it would have made me a bitter, worn and complacent woman. I see it all the time — women who have settled for less than their calling suffering from perpetual burn out. I chose a different journey. Rather than complain I would change things. That determination has carried me from classroom teacher, to award winning instructional designer, all the way to making the leap from employee to entrepreneur.

It is always important to be grateful for what you have and where you are. Being grateful allowed me to be present in a job I disliked. But acknowledging that I had outgrown my role opened the door for me to freely and confidently look for what was next. My inner dialogue was one of excitement about possibilities rather than trying to talk myself into staying in a job that was draining my energy, enthusiasm and passion. And as I began to talk about what I really wanted and ask for what I wanted, the opportunities and support showed up.

If you need to make a change, stop trying to talk yourself into what you really don’t want. You can be grateful for what you have and want to change. Whether it’s your career, your relationship, or your business, you will never be satisfied if you are being dishonest about what you really want.

When Self-Improvement Gets Boring, Try These 6 Motivational Strategies

#workbully #adultbully #stopbullies #narcissist

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
When Self-Improvement Gets Boring, Try These 6 Motivational Strategies
As human beings, we’re always striving to be better. The most common self-improvement goals people set, particularly this time of year, are things like losing weight, improving our cholesterol numbers or blood pressure, or getting in shape for a marathon. These are body goals. They are concrete and easy to understand. Because we have metrics to measure things like weight loss, for example, it’s easy to track our progress and stay motivated.

Making “soul resolutions” is more challenging. These are the deeper aspects of self-growth. These would be things like trying to be less critical, more loving, more patient, or more optimistic. Soul resolutions are not so easy to measure.

And that can be a problem. Too often, when it comes to changing profound aspects of our attitudes, behavior, and character, we can get bored, uninspired, and discouraged after a while. We can’t really tell sometimes if our efforts are “paying off.”

To avoid the boredom of spirit that sometimes accompanies profound changes you’re trying to make on yourself, here are some simple strategies for staying motivated.

Check in with your priorities. What’s really important in your life? This is a question that will get you back on track quickly. Make changes in how your spend your time so that you can keep strengthening the behaviors that will reinforce your soul resolutions.

Learn from the discomfort. Trying to be a better person is challenging, difficult, and uncomfortable. It can even be painful and cause you to suffer — particularly if you have to do things like apologize, change your friend group, or do a lot of self-examining. When things get hard to take, embrace the discomfort and ask yourself what it’s teaching you.

Laugh and play more. It can be boring and tedious to be always working on self-improvement. Add pleasurable, fun activities to your life. The more you laugh, the better you’ll feel. Laughter is good for the soul, and an important antidote to all your hard work.

Go easy on your expectations. There are times when you might think you should have already attained a particular goalpost, yet find that you’re still struggling to get there. Instead of becoming impatient with your journey, make whatever it is you’re doing in the now be the priority, instead of focusing on the end result. Let your present state be exactly where you want to be for the moment, and find fulfillment in it.

Self-reflect every day. Staying on track with transformations of the soul are most easily seen by reflecting on one’s day-to-day actions. Were you kind in your interaction with a family member today? Did you stop and change a limiting thought into a supportive one when you felt doubt yesterday?

Be grateful. When we give thanks and feel gratitude, our soul is free to live. You can always find at least one thing to be grateful for. Gratitude is the “fix” for boredom and discouragement while you’re on the road to becoming a better person.

Make working toward changes of your soul a daily practice. This is one way to redesign who we are from the inside out.

Soul of a Drag Queen

#workbully #adultbully #stopbullies #narcissist

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
Soul of a Drag Queen
Drag queens: Can’t live with them; can’t live without them. Well, at least that is how I feel sometimes. However, when it comes right down to it, I have a huge amount of respect for these entertainers and what they do.

The one aspect I respect the most is the fact that these individuals are putting themselves out there and take risks every time they take the stage. I honestly wish that that was something I could do. No, I don’t want to do drag; it’s just not a fit for me. However, I do wish I could take the risk of putting myself out there.

There are times that I wonder whether it’s true that if I’d put myself out there more when I was younger rather than doing what was expected of me, I would now be in a different place in my life. Don’t get me wrong: I have a good life. Yes, there are times that I don’t see it, but I stop and reflect on it objectively, and then I realize that I do in fact have a good life. I also realize that if I were in a different place in my life, that could mean that I would have never met Jeff, and that is something I just can’t fathom.

So when I talk about being in a different place in my life, I’m referring to what I do for a living. Growing up, I always succeeded in academics, so it was just assumed by my parents and family that I would go on to college, get a degree, and get a job in a cubicle farm. For the most part, that is what happened — with a 10-year detour — but in the end I went to school and received not one but two degrees, and I work in a cubicle farm.

Now, I am extremely grateful that I have a job, especially given the current state of the employment world. However, I can’t stop wondering where I would be now if I’d taken risks and put myself out there and pursued interests that I had a passion for. When I was younger, my passion was for music and art. One of my dreams was to compose music for Disney films or even create the artwork for them. Instead of taking that risk and pursuing music or art, I went the easy route and started in engineering and, after the 10-year detour, finished with business degrees.

If I had had the soul of a drag queen back then, I would have thrown caution to the wind and gone after what I loved, not what was expected of me. See, to me, that is what drag queens do: They go after their dreams, their passion, and they put themselves out there and take risks.

Like most people, I find that risk scares me, and it has always prevented me from pursuing things in life. Part of that is the way I was raised, but most of it is due to the fact that I’m just afraid to put myself out there. I’m always too concerned with what others might say or think. That kind of thinking makes you sit on the sidelines of life and watch it pass you by.

Drag queens take life by the horns, and they enjoy the ride no matter where it may take them. Sometimes they fail, and sometimes they succeed, but the point is that they actively partake in life. If there is one lesson I can take away from my life as a drag queen’s husband, it’s this: The soul of a drag queen is a beautiful thing, and it’s something that more of us should inspire to have.

To read more life lessons from drag, be sure to read the Diary of a Drag Queen’s Husband, or even ask a question of the Von Bs for your personalized life lesson.

You? An Expert? Really?

#workbully #adultbully #stopbullies #narcissist

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
You? An Expert? Really?
A business coach I admire recently wrote that calling oneself an expert in one’s field is, well, unattractive. Quickly (and perhaps impulsively), I immediately removed the words “relationship expert” from all of my business materials. I certainly didn’t want to be the jerky self-promoter this coach was implying I might be.

In the months since, I’ve wrestled with this decision. What’s really so wrong with proclaiming your expertise so long as you have the cred to back it up?

Don’t we look for a person who has comprehensive knowledge of or skill in a particular area (thank you, Oxford Dictionaries) when we’re seeking help? Various online sources claim the word “expert” is from the Latin “expertus,” which means, loosely, having tested, proved or experienced. And that’s just what we expect from experts — that they learn and discover better ways to do things we can’t do ourselves.

“I don’t mind if my obstetrician isn’t up to speed on the latest advances in medical technology,” said no one, ever. And don’t we want electricians to be experts in safely wiring our homes? And how about the folks who work for the FDA? Aren’t they experts in the ingredients of the foods we eat and the drugs we take? And I, for one, am quite happy with a hairstylist who is expert at cutting hair.

I’m assuming it’s not actually being the expert this coach took issue with. Maybe it’s the calling oneself an expert that feels icky to her. Maybe you shouldn’t have to tell people you’re an expert — you should just quietly go about the business of being one. And I understand that sentiment. I really do.

But there are many ways we tell the world we’re experts. Police, firefighters, judges and nurses wear clothing that distinguish them as experts. Doctors indicate their level of proficiency by the length of their white coats. Conversely, the saleswoman I approached at a home improvement store recently wore a “Trainee” tag, identifying her as someone who might not yet be able to provide the level of help customers need. We recognize other professionals — architects, therapists, lawyers, and accountants, to name a few — by the jumble of letters following their names on their business cards. And thank goodness. Those jumbled letters mean a lot when we’re looking for someone with a particular expertise.

So perhaps this business coach’s words tapped into something that went a bit deeper and darker for me than I’d care to admit. I mean, she got me thinking, “Who am I to call myself an expert?” I’m not really good or smart enough to be an expert on anything. Right? They kind of set me back a notch or two in that endless battle against self-doubt.

A client of mine is currently going for her doctorate in nuclear engineering. She’s otherworldly brilliant. But she’s nervous she won’t be granted her Ph.D. “Who am I to think I deserve this?” she asks. Why? Because she’s vulnerable to the small voice that comes from that doubting, smirking place in all of us. And nothing can tap into that place like someone asking just who the heck you think you are calling yourself an expert.

Identifying yourself as an expert isn’t the end game. It’s not the self-congratulatory final nail in your personal or professional growth. It’s simply a way of telling others you have spent countless hours of your life working toward a level of knowledge — and yes, expertise — you hope can serve them in some way. Claiming you’re an expert at something is a way of extending a proverbial helping hand. And, if we’ve lived long enough, we’re all expert at something.

Calling myself a relationship expert in no way means I believe I know everything about relationships. I never will — nor do I imagine that’s even possible. But I spend more time studying them, writing about them and researching them than the woman who owns that amazing cupcake shop down the street. And every day I’m in the trenches working with individuals and couples helping them figure theirs out. And, yes, I have to guess that makes me more of an expert on relationships than my neighbor, the website developer.

I’m not yet back to publicly calling myself an expert. That may take some time. But in the meantime, I want to thank all of those who make everyday life possible and better and safer through their expertise. And a special shout-out to all you expert air traffic controllers. Seriously, you people rock.

Last Night

#workbully #adultbully #stopbullies #narcissist

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
Last Night
Last night I put my phone on the kitchen table and went upstairs with my daughter. We both plopped down on her flowery quilt and talked. We talked about the cutest boys in the 2nd grade, the soggy pizza calzone that they served in the cafeteria yesterday, and then I told her about my adventures dodging motorized carts at the grocery store on Seniors’ Day.

I heard my phone vibrating ferociously on the table. It’s actually louder on vibrate than it is with my ringtone set to deafening decibels and blaring “Axel F” from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack.

I ignored the noise. I didn’t care what text/email/social media alert waited for me there. I continued to talk with my little girl.

We played twelve games of Old Maid. She beat me at Uno three times. We read the funniest parts of her favorite Junie B. Jones book. We laughed out loud.

And then she asked if I would sleep in her bed so we could talk some more and I could tell her funny stories about the “olden days” (the 1980s).

Instead of coming up with some excuse to sleep in my own soft bed, I happily agreed. I know there will come a time when she’ll be kicking me out of her room instead of inviting me to stay.

I left my phone on the table for nearly three hours — which is a personal record, unless it is lost or I’m sleeping. It seems that I’m always connected to the world through my phone. As soon as I’m done eating dinner, I reach for it. As the DVR fast forwards through commercials, I reach for it. As I listen to my daughter, I don’t hesitate to mentally leave our conversation and pick it up when it rattles to let me know that someone from the outside world needs my attention.

But last night, I ignored it when I heard it tumbling around on the kitchen table. I really listened to my little girl’s stories, and I watched her laugh until tears welled up in her eyes when I told her about the time I gracefully plowed through a fence on a Pogo ball. The phone could wait.

As she was lying close to me in the bed and I ran my fingers through her long blonde hair, she yawned and said, “I had a good time with you tonight, Mama.”

She needed my attention more than any email, text or Facebook notification.

And I needed her more than any of those things, too.
